The Waiting is one of America’s most electrifying roadhouse rock & roll bands—and they’ve got a one-track mission: to bring the music of Tom Petty to life with grit, heart, and zero gimmicks.
This isn’t a lookalike act. No wigs, no cosplay, no karaoke vibes. Just a group of top-tier musicians channeling the raw soul and swagger of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, his solo catalog, and even his time as Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. in the Traveling Wilburys. With roaring guitars, locked-in grooves, and vocals that hit you right in the memory bank, The Waiting doesn’t just play Petty’s music—they ignite it.
Formed in 2013, The Waiting has been tearing through the American West, turning first-timers into superfans and longtime Petty lovers into loyal followers. Whether it’s a smash hit like “Refugee” or a deep cut that only the truest fans can hum by heart, they play with a fiery energy and tight musicianship that brings audiences to their feet and keeps them there.
“We don’t try to recreate the exact record—we create moments,” says bassist and cofounder Doc Wiley, whose career spans everything from Grammy-winning mix engineer, studio designer, to touring musician. “If we’re playing ‘Breakdown,’ we might stretch it out, pass solos around, and then slam right back into that hook everyone knows. It’s a conversation, not a copy.”
The seed for The Waiting was planted in a Manhattan apartment near CBGB, where Wiley had a revelatory hang with Late Show bassist Will Lee. They talked about music that meant something—about creating tribute without imitation. That ethos became the DNA of The Waiting.
By the time Wiley landed in Bozeman, Montana, in 2009, the plan was in motion: assemble a band that played the Petty catalog with reverence and reckless joy. Think dive-bar energy with stadium-caliber skill.
Today, The Waiting is more than a band—it’s a traveling celebration of one of rock’s greatest songwriters. A Petty party that’s loud, proud, and designed to bring fans together through the soundtrack of their lives.
